Before you get into it – the ailse (cancer) thing is a controversial topic (ábhar conspóideach – useful for aistí). Technically, she didn’t have cancer when she wrote the poem. No one knows exactly what any poem is about, but it’s very possible it’s about her feeling trapped in a man’s world. She was a women’s rights activist, played Máire in An Triail back in the day.
That said, pretty much every book and leabhar nótaí on this dán talks about it being a dán fáthchiallach (has two meanings) and about her being sick in hospital. Some of the people talking about the ailse online are Leaving Cert correctors. So really, I think we can stick to that theory when writing our LC answers. But others may disagree…
